Give Me Some Sugah, the new Netflix movie from producers Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin, just released its first-look images, and I’m already clearing my calendar for December 16.
This is more proof that Tyler Perry is one of the hardest-working men in the movie business, because I’ve honestly lost count of how many new projects he has coming out. Sure, I could easily go back and count them, but what would be the fun in that? Besides, that gives you an excuse to go look at more pages on our blog.

What Is Give Me Some Sugah About?

Anywho, Give Me Some Sugah stars Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson as Lenore Lindsey and tells her remarkable true story.
Lenore is a baker from Chicago who is stunned by an incredible discovery that inspires her to reclaim lost time, heal old wounds, and find a new purpose in life through a series of unexpected miracles.
If you’ve been following this one for a while, you might know it by its old title, ‘Tis So Sweet. Netflix renamed it after Lenore’s real bakery, which is a much better call if you ask me.
Is Give Me Some Sugah a True Story?

Yes. If Lenore Lindsey’s name sounds familiar, it’s because her story went viral.
She discovered that one of her longtime customers at Give Me Some Sugah, her bakery in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood, was actually the biological son she had placed for adoption nearly 50 years earlier.
His name is Vamarr Hunter. He found out he was adopted at 35, and years later he worked with a genetic genealogist to track down his birth mother. The answer turned out to be the woman behind the counter at his favorite bakery. He’d been a regular there for more than a decade and lived about a block away.
When the bakery’s number popped up on his phone, he assumed it was about an order he didn’t remember placing. It was his mother.
Today, Vamarr works alongside Lenore at the bakery. He stepped in to help run the business when she faced serious health challenges, and by all accounts his pound cake is now the one to beat.
I remember seeing a news story on this remarkable series of events. It stuck with me. You come across a lot of stories scrolling and when you come across a good news story. It melts your heart. Take a look below.
So knowing that Tyler and DeVon are producing this movie makes it even more inspiring. According to ABC Chicago, the family started getting movie offers soon after their story aired, but they were holding out for a call from Tyler Perry. Looks like they got it.

Equally of note, the movie is directed by Tasha Smith, the remarkable actress and filmmaker, from a script by Randy Brown, who also wrote Miracles From Heaven.
Tasha has quietly built a strong résumé behind the camera, with directing credits on BMF, Bel-Air, Harlem, and Mayor of Kingstown. So you know this is going to be one to watch.
Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin’s Netflix Partnership
Give Me Some Sugah is the second faith-based film from Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin’s partnership with Netflix. The first, Ruth and Boaz, debuted at No. 2 on Netflix’s global Top 10 movies list.
It’s also another big Netflix moment for Taraji, who starred in Tyler Perry’s thriller Straw and reunited with him for Why Did I Get Married Again?
