Not Suitable for Work has been canceled, as Hulu opted not to greenlight a second season. It’s disappointing news—this was quickly becoming one of my favorite shows. Created by Mindy Kaling, the series follows five twenty-somethings in New York City navigating their careers and relationships. Is the premise groundbreaking? No, but it had so much potential, and it deserved the room to let its characters and subplots fully develop.

The first official trailer for the A Different World reboot is finally here. The brand-new sequel series premieres on Netflix on September 24.
Right away, the visual tone sets expectations. This is not a standard multi-cam sitcom from the late eighties. The cinematography takes clear cues from Peacock’s Bel-Air, leaning into a gritty, cinematic, single-camera look that grounds Hillman College in modern reality.

Every classic college drama needs a central romance, and we get our first look at her primary love interest: Shaquille Johnson, played by Cornell Young IV. Shaq is a five-star high school football recruit who stunned the sports world by choosing Hillman, his father’s alma mater.
His father is none other than Ron Johnson, who also serves as his business manager. Early footage shows Shaq caught in the classic struggle between managing his massive ego, surviving his dad’s sky-high expectations, and trying to win Deborah’s heart.
Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy return to the roles that defined a generation of Black television romance. Their lives look very different these days.
Dwayne is fully invested in rebuilding Hillman College and restoring the institution to its former glory days.
Whitley, on the other hand, recently sold her beauty empire, “Glitter by Gilbert,” for a mountain of cash. With infinite free time and cash to burn, she has channeled all that executive energy into micromanaging her three adult children. That means she is going to be hovering over campus all semester long.
The biggest jaw dropper comes from a photo of Jada Pinkett Smith who plays Lena James walking arm and arm with Dwayne.
Details on her character’s exact storyline remain tightly under wraps. But if you watched the show you remember her character had a crush on Dwayne. Still, anyone who spends five minutes on social media knows what will happen if her character causes even a slight tremor in Dwayne and Whitley’s marriage. If she steps between those two, expect the internet to unleash thousands of think pieces labeling her a certified supervillain.
Between the cinematic camera work, the legacy cast, and a compelling new crew of freshmen, this revival looks promising. A Different World managed to shape culture decades ago, and seeing that legacy rebuilt on the Hillman campus for a new era is worth marking on your calendar for September 24.
