The trailer for Above the Below is officially out, and if you love Idris Elba and disaster-in-space movies, this one is for you.

I love first trailers because they rarely give away the whole film the way final trailers do. With this one, you can tell something crazy went down. Three astronauts are now fighting for their lives after a crash from outer space sends them plummeting into the ocean. That’s going from one frontier to another.

What Happens in the Above the Below Trailer?

After the crash landing, the crew has no contact with mission control and their oxygen is running out fast. The suspense is set right from the jump.

Idris handles the voiceover in the trailer, and his delivery makes the whole thing feel like a real fight for survival. It gets you thinking. What would you do in that situation to save yourself and your crew?

The trailer opens with Idris saying, “Until you’re faced with the most dire of life threatening situations you have no way of knowing how you’ll actually respond.” That statement kick an intense opening scene. Also having watched a ton of trailers in my life, I can tell that there will be a lot of twist in this movie.

What Is Above the Below About?

Above the Below is a survival thriller about three astronauts who make it through a violent re-entry to Earth, only to land way off course in the middle of the ocean. Their capsule starts sinking, they’re cut off from the world, and every breath counts.

The real tension comes down to one ugly decision. Somebody has to risk everything trying to reach the surface, and somebody might get left behind with the wreckage. That’s the kind of setup that turns a disaster movie into a pressure cooker.

It also looks like a lean ride. With a runtime at around 85 minutes, this is refreshing in an era where everything wants to be three hours long. That gives you enough time to catch a double feature lol.

Above the Below Cast: Who Stars With Idris Elba?

Idris Elba leads the film as Jackson, the mission commander. He’s joined by Caitlin FitzGerald, who you may know from Masters of Sex and We Were Liars, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin from the After movies and Young Sherlock.

FitzGerald plays Brooks and Fiennes Tiffin plays Rhodes, rounding out the three-person crew.

The Wire actor isn’t just carrying this one on screen. Idris Elba co-directs Above the Below alongside Martin Owen, who came up with the original idea for the film. It’s Elba’s second feature as a director after his 2018 debut, Yardie.

They also went practical with it. The production shot at Pinewood Studios in the U.K., including its underwater stage, and Elba has said they actually built a spacecraft and sank it in a water tank. That explains why the trailer feels so claustrophobic.

Lionsgate is distributing the film.

When Does Above the Below Come Out?

Above the Below hits theaters December 4, 2026.

If the Above the Below trailer is any indication, this is one to catch on the biggest screen you can find. Maybe not the best pick if you’re claustrophobic, though.
