Watch the Why Did I Get Married Again Trailer: The Couples Return September 9

Yes, it’s real. The first “Why Did I Get Married Again? trailer is here. Tyler Perry is officially bringing the crew back after 16 years. The sequel hits Netflix globally on September 9, and the trailer is sitting right here in this post waiting on you.

So before you do anything else today, watch it. Then come back so we can talk about it, because there is a lot to unpack.

Watch the Why Did I Get Married Again Trailer

Sixteen years. That’s how long it’s been since Why Did I Get Married Too? left us staring at the screen like we personally went through the divorce. If you were anywhere near a living room in 2007 or 2010, you know these movies. They weren’t just films. They were events. Somebody’s mama had the DVD. Somebody’s auntie quoted Angela at Thanksgiving.

Now the couples are back, and the trailer confirms what we hoped. The chemistry didn’t go anywhere.

The setup this time: everybody reunites because Marcus and Angela’s daughter is getting married. According to the official logline from Netflix, the couples have been apart for a while, and they quickly learn that as much as things change, they stay the same. Their kids have grown up to be just like them, which forces the OGs to look in the mirror and ask that age-old question all over again. Why did they get married… again?

If that premise doesn’t have sequel-of-the-year energy, I don’t know what does.

The Whole Crew Is Back (And They Are in Their Perfect Vacation Clothes)

Let’s talk about the visuals for a second. The first thing you notice in the trailer and the official images is the fits. They are in their perfect vacation clothes. Linen. Sunglasses. That specific “grown and financially stable on a group trip” aesthetic. It’s giving reunion episode, and I mean that as the highest compliment.

The returning cast is stacked. Tyler Perry, Taraji P. Henson, Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Lamman Rucker, and Sharon Leal. That’s the full original energy.

But this isn’t just a nostalgia play. There’s a whole new generation joining the cast, including Da’Vinchi, Laya Deleon Hayes, Jaden Michael, Armani Greer, Everett Osborne, Charles L. Smith II, Derrick A. King, and Sydney Winbush. Their children have the same issues their parents did.

Tyler Perry Says the Reunion Felt Like “Putting On a Warm Robe”

Perry opened up to PEOPLE about why he brought this world back, and the quote is honestly kind of sweet.

“Introducing this new generation of characters gave us an opportunity to give the kids an opportunity to shine and go through things and eventually realize they’re not perfect and neither were their parents,” Perry told PEOPLE. He said reuniting the gang years later “felt like putting on a warm robe,” and that the sequel “lent itself to realizing where we all are in life.”

That’s the whole appeal right there. These movies always worked because they felt like watching real friends argue over dinner. Perry knows exactly what he built, and he’s not messing with the formula.

Taraji Said Yes Immediately (Obviously)

Taraji P. Henson also talked to PEOPLE, and her reason for coming back is the most relatable thing in this entire press cycle.

“This was one of those projects that I knew I had to say yes to, not just because of Tyler, but because of this entire cast. It’s also not every day that you get to work with one of your best friends, so sharing scenes with my girl Tasha Smith was amazing. We almost had too much fun!”

Taraji and Tasha sharing scenes again? That alone is worth the watch. Angela and the crew going at it was always the heartbeat of these movies, and “we almost had too much fun” tells me the trailer is only showing us a fraction of the chaos.
