Apple TV+ has quietly become one of the most reliable streaming platforms in the game. Between Severance, Shrinking, Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, and For All Mankind, they’ve built a reputation for dropping quality over quantity. So anytime they announce something new, my ears perk up.
And now, Star City is officially on the radar.
If the name sounds familiar, that’s because this new series comes from the award winning creative minds behind For All Mankind—which already tells you this probably isn’t some throwaway sci-fi experiment. That show took the space race concept and turned it into one of the smartest alternate-history dramas on streaming. So naturally, expectations for Star City are high.
This time, the story flips the perspective.
Instead of following the American side of the space race, Star City takes viewers behind the Iron Curtain and explores the Soviet space program through the lives of the engineers, cosmonauts, and intelligence officers who helped shape that world. That alone makes this instantly interesting because we’ve seen plenty of stories about America reaching for the stars. We rarely get this angle.
And honestly? That’s what makes this feel fresh. The series stars Rhys Ifans, who looks unrecognizable from his House Of The Dragon character, Otto Hightower. Along side him, Solly McLeod, Anna Maxwell Martin and Priya Kansara, to name a few.
A well-done historical drama with espionage, political tension, ambition, and the paranoia of the Cold War? Yeah, sign me up.
If For All Mankind is any indication, expect layered storytelling, emotional character arcs, and the kind of “just one more episode” momentum that ruins your sleep schedule.
Star City premieres May 29 on Apple TV+.
If Apple keeps this streak alive, this might be another one worth obsessing over. Checkout this clip from episode 1 of Star City below.
