Fifty years after Sissy Spacek got drenched in pig’s blood on prom night, Carrie White is back. And this time she’s got the one man in horror who knows how to make you cry and scream in the same episode.
Mike Flanagan’s Carrie drops on Prime Video on Wednesday, October 7, and all eight episodes land at once. Clear your evening. Maybe your whole week. Mike has an aura to him that lets you know he knows horror. I had the opportunity to sit down with him at The Stanley Hotel in Colorado several years back and the man knows his stuff. So if anyone can do justice to Carrie. It’s Mike. I remember the first time I saw the original. A Blockbuster rental I watched with my girlfriend at the time. Needless to say we slept with the lights on.
The Basics
- Premiere: Wednesday, October 7, 2026
- Where: Prime Video, worldwide
- Episodes: 8, all released at once
- Showrunner: Mike Flanagan (writer, executive producer, director of four episodes)
- Executive producers: Flanagan, Trevor Macy, Stephen King
- Music: The Newton Brothers
The series also closed Primetime at TIFF in September, so critics have had eyes on it. That’s usually a good sign. Streamers don’t send their nervous projects to Toronto.
Who’s in It
Flanagan cast newcomer Summer H. Howell as Carrie after a search that reportedly saw nearly 1,500 actors audition. That’s a big swing on an unknown, and honestly the right one. Carrie only works when you believe she’s invisible.
The rest of the ensemble:
- Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White, Carrie’s mother (a Flanagan regular, and a role reportedly written with her in mind)
- Siena Agudong as Sue Snell
- Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen
- Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Carrie’s prom date
- Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin
- Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle
- Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Thalia Dudek
- Plus Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Heather Graham, Katee Sackhoff and Michael Trucco
If you watched Midnight Mass or The Fall of the House of Usher, half this cast list is going to feel like a family reunion. That’s the Flanagan Repertory Company and we love to see it.
What’s Different This Time

Here’s where it gets interesting. This isn’t a straight remake of the De Palma film.
It goes back to the book’s structure. King’s 1974 novel was told partly through documents: news reports, testimony, investigative findings. Flanagan is reportedly bringing that in, with 911 calls from prom night, recorded testimony, police reports and scientific attempts to explain Carrie’s telekinesis. That’s the part of the novel no adaptation has really nailed.
Every episode gets a cold open about another girl. Starting with episode two, each installment reportedly opens on a short story about a different woman from a different time and place who also has telekinetic powers. It turns Carrie from a one-off monster into part of a lineage. Smart.
Carrie’s backstory is reworked. In this version, she’s reportedly spent her life hidden away by her mother, with almost nobody knowing she existed, and she enters high school after her father’s sudden death.
The episode titles are school subjects. “First Period.” “Foreign Language.” “Social Studies.” “AP Physics.” Flanagan is a menace and we respect it.
How It Stacks Up to Past Versions
Brian De Palma’s 1976 film with Sissy Spacek is the blueprint. It earned Oscar nominations for its performances, and that prom scene still lives rent-free in every horror fan’s head. Untouchable.
Then came The Rage: Carrie 2 in 1999 with Emily Bergl. It’s a sequel. It exists. That’s about all we’ll say.
The 2002 TV movie with Angela Bettis is the one people forget, and it shouldn’t be. It actually tried the book’s investigative structure years before anyone else. Underrated and underfunded.
Kimberly Peirce’s 2013 version with Chloë Grace Moretz was fine. Also forgettable. Moretz was simply too pretty to sell the girl nobody sees.
Which brings us to Flanagan’s 2026 series with Summer H. Howell. Where it lands on this list? We’ll know Wednesday. One thing for sure this has all the bones for an excellent series. Something to keep you entertained and invested as you binge. Who will you be watching.
